It was springtime and the azaleas were in bloom and everything seemed right with the world. If you get an invite take it because it’s a delightful course and watch out for the greens… they are huge and that was one of the reasons why my score was so bad. However even scratch players like Mike can struggle - his birdie putt from above the hole on 5 never stopped until it got to the bottom of the hill! Jones had recently added to his world wide notoriety by founding a spectacular little golf club two and a half hours away from Atlanta and using it to host an annual invitational tournament for the very best players of the day. The 9th hole at Peachtree reminded me of the 9th hole at Augusta. The course continues on working its way around over and through this very interesting and dynamic property. Throw in some eye catching water hazards (designed to really get into your head), super quick greens- and it all sounds a little familiar doesn't it? Sun City Peachtree GC. While the 9th at Peachtree is not a hard dogleg left off the tee, the approach to the green is straight uphill and like the 9th green at Augusta, the 9th green at Peachtree is brutally challenging, especially if the pin is back right as it was for me. The first thing that hits you upon walking to the first tee is the rolling landscape, indeed just like Augusta National. Similarly to Augusta, the theme to score well at Peachtree is both knowing where to leave your ball on the putting surfaces and actually doing it. I tell people if you can't get on Augusta National (and really who can) Peachtree GC will be as close as you can get. When you walk on the grounds of Peachtree Golf Club, just outside of Atlanta, you are walking onto the sister of Augusta National. Understated and low key with a great course. The rolling terrain, fantastic architecture, serenity you feel throughout the round, and near perfect conditions define the experience. Definitely a course that will challenge your all-round game. The par five 2nd hole gives an early indication of what lies ahead during the round, setting out along a ridge before it falls over a creek to a split fairway that leads to a pond-protected green. It’s no wonder comparisons are often made to Augusta National. Not many of us get to play a very good golf course in such condition- it certainly was a treat. The greens and hilly lies make it a tough course to score well on- but it is a real privilege to play there. My invitation came on the eve of the 2013 Masters (won by Adam Scott), and I had a memorable day. But how could it be anything else, since Atlanta was the man’s home. The excellent tree-lined and open parkland layout contains a wealth of wonderfully crafted, memorable and challenging holes. A good drive taking on the slope on the right hand side can offer up a chance to go for this green in two. The 18-hole Braelinn course at the Braelinn Golf Club facility in Peachtree City, features 6,815 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. Peachtree is a decidedly low key affair, the clubhouse is understated, the grill room is understated and the membership is both low key and low profile. The last course on my trip to the Pinehurst area was to be played on my way back to Atlanta. The 13th hole is a medium length par 4 that was one of my favorite holes on the course. The 4th hole is the first par 3 on the course and it is a charming little gem. - hole 2, a shorter teasing par 5 where two good shots might get you home for two- but water and bunkers can bring you undone- hole 3, a strong par 4 with a creek in play left and a very tricky green- hole 4, a picture postcard par 3- hole 5, a par 5 to an elevated green with 2 tiers and a lightning quick putting surface- hole 6, another good looking par 3- hole 12, a solid par 4 with water crossing the fairway diagonally- hole 13, a shorter par with a shallow tabletop green- hole 14, a par 3 over water with a green angled to the line of play and sloping to the water.
